Cup-constructed halter tops tend to look more complicated than they are, this one builds each side separately before joining, which actually makes the shaping easier to manage than it looks. The scalloped edges along the cups and the open-shell hem band are the finishing details that pull the whole piece together. If you’ve made the backless halter top, you’ll recognize the general workflow here.
Airy Crochet Top

Light blue works beautifully for this style, but the scalloped cups would read equally well in white or cream against a contrasting strap color. For another beginner-friendly halter with similar construction logic, the beach top bralette covers much of the same ground.
Materials
2.5 mm crochet hook for the main body
3.5 mm crochet hook for straps and ribbon
Fine cotton yarn 16 ply for the body
Sport weight or 32 ply yarn for straps
Stitch markers
Yarn needle
Beads and tassels (optional)
Stitch and Shaping Clarity
This project utilizes a combination of open lacework and solid double crochet sections. The Diamond Shell is the focal point; it is created using a two-row repeat where Row 1 builds the “fans” and Row 2 creates the “arches” that frame them.
To maintain professional, straight edges on the solid double crochet rows, we use a cluster double crochet (also known as a standing or stacked stitch) at the end of rows. This prevents the common “gap” that occurs when using a standard Chain 2 as a turning stitch, ensuring your side seams look polished and are easier to crochet into later during the edging phase.
Beginner Notes
If you are new to garment construction, the most important step is the Under Bust Band. This acts as the anchor for the entire top.
Tension Check: Ensure your chain 75 isn’t too tight. If the foundation chain is tighter than your double crochets, the band will “smile” (curve upward) rather than sit flat against the ribs.
Counting: In Row 1, precisely skipping 3 chains is vital. If you skip too few or too many, the diamond repeats won’t align, and your Row 2 arches will look lopsided.
Under Bust Band Diamond Pattern
Foundation: Make a slip knot and chain 75 (or any multiple of 8 plus 3).

- Row 1: Work 4 double crochets into the third chain from the hook. Skip 3 chains, single crochet in the next. Skip 3 chains, work 3 double crochets, chain 1, 3 double crochets in the next stitch. Repeat across and end with 4 double crochets in the last chain.
- Row 2: Chain 1, turn. Single crochet in the first stitch, chain 7, single crochet in the chain 1 space. Repeat across and single crochet in the last stitch.
- Row 3: Chain 2, turn. Double crochet in every stitch and chain across and finish the last stitch with a cluster double crochet to keep the edge straight.
- Row 4: Chain 2, turn. Double crochet in each stitch across ending with a cluster double crochet.
- Row 5: Repeat the previous row.

Bust Cups
Setup: Find the center of the band and place a stitch marker so both sides have equal stitches.
- First Cup Row 1: Chain 2, turn. Double crochet across until the stitch before the marker and finish with a cluster double crochet.
- First Cup Row 2: Mark desired bust width. Start with two double crochets together (decreasing), then double crochet across and end with a cluster double crochet.
- Cup Completion: Continue repeating the decrease row until the cup reaches the collarbone height.
- Second Cup: Attach yarn next to the center marker and repeat the same steps to mirror the first cup.

Fit and Sizing Guidance
The beauty of this construction is the mirror-image cups. To ensure a perfect fit:
The “Pinch” Test: Before starting the second cup, hold the first cup against yourself. It should reach the mid-point of your collarbone. If it feels too narrow, reduce the number of decreases in the early rows.
Symmetry: Count your rows for the first cup and write them down. It is essential that the second cup matches the row count exactly to prevent an asymmetrical look.
Lower Body and Edging
Lower Body: Attach yarn to the bottom foundation chain and repeat the diamond shell pattern to form the second half of the diamonds.
Edging: Work single crochet evenly along all edges using two single crochets per double crochet row and one single crochet per single crochet row.
Shell Detail: Create shell edging by working five double crochets into one row, then slip stitch into the next row, repeating along the edge.
Straps and Finishing

- Shoulder Straps: For shoulder straps, chain 20 with the larger hook. Thread through the top of the cup, then chain 100 or desired length. Add tassels or beads if desired.
- Back Lace: For the back lace, chain approximately 300 and weave through the back edges in a crisscross pattern.
- Front Ribbon: For the front ribbon, attach yarn to the center shell. Chain 40 to form a bow and finish with beads if desired.
Troubleshooting and Finishing Notes
Curly Edges: If your shell edging begins to curl or “ruffle” too much, you may be putting too many stitches into the side of the rows.
Ensure you are following the ratio of 2 SC per DC row height.
Support: Because this is a cotton garment, it may stretch slightly when wet or after long wear.
- The Back Lace is designed to be adjustable—pull it tighter for more support or loosen it for a relaxed festival look.
- Before weaving in your ends, steam block the diamond band to open up the lace and show off the stitch definition.
