Free Asymmetrical Hem Crochet Top Pattern – Effortless Edge Top

Beginner Friendly Crochet Asymmetrical hem top 5

Cap sleeves, a square neckline, and a pointed hem at center front this coral top packs a lot of detail into a beginner-friendly construction. For a similar pointed-hem effect without the sleeves, the asymmetrical flower top takes the diagonal hem in a mesh direction.

The lace-up back adds a corset feel without any complex shaping just threaded yarn through eyelets at the finish. If you enjoy the cap sleeve detail and want to try a different neckline, the asymmetrical drapy edge top is a natural companion make.

Materials

Before you begin, gather your supplies. This project works best with breathable, structured fibers that hold their shape.

  • Yarn: Light-weight (Sport) or Medium-weight (DK) cotton yarn (approx. 150 to 200 grams).

  • Hook: 3.0 mm or 3.5 mm crochet hook (choose based on your personal tension to achieve a solid fabric for the cups).

  • Notions: Scissors, yarn needle, and at least 4 stitch markers.

Sizing & Measurements

This pattern is easily customizable and made-to-measure:

  • Cups: Sized by chaining the length from the base of your breast to the nipple.

  • Body Length: Customizable by working more or fewer rows until your desired asymmetrical point is reached.

Stitch to Master Before Starting

1. The Cups (Make 2)

  • Foundation: Create a slip knot and chain enough stitches to reach from the base of your breast to the nipple area. (Typically 10 to 15 chains depending on your size).

  • Row 1: Double crochet in the second chain from your hook and in each chain across until you reach the final chain. In the last chain, work (2 double crochet, chain 1, 2 double crochet) to form the top point of the cup. Rotate your work and continue working double crochets down the opposite side of your foundation chain. Turn.

  • Row 2: Chain 2 (does not count as a stitch). Double crochet in each stitch until you reach the chain-1 space at the peak. Inside the chain-1 space, work (2 double crochet, chain 1, 2 double crochet). Double crochet in each remaining stitch to the end of the row. Turn.

  • Repeat Row 2: Continue repeating this row until the cup provides your desired coverage. Fasten off the first cup; do not fasten off the second cup.

💡 Pro-Tip: Perfect Cups Every Time

Place a stitch marker into the chain-1 space at the peak of your cup on every single row. This ensures you never accidentally skip your increase point, keeping your cup perfectly symmetrical.

2. Joining the Cups

  • Place the two completed cups side by side with the right sides facing up.

  • Attach yarn at the bottom center where the two cups meet.

  • Join the bottom center edges together using slip stitches (or single crochets) for about 1 to 2 inches to secure the center cleavage area. Fasten off.

3. Body and Asymmetrical Hem

  • Row 1: Attach your yarn to the outer bottom corner of one cup. Work rows of regular double crochet evenly across the entire lower edge of both joined cups. Turn.

Row 2 (Shaping Row): To create the beautiful diagonal drape, you will increase on one edge of the top while decreasing on the opposite edge.

  • On the Increase Edge: Work 2 double crochets into the very first stitch.
  • Across the Row: Double crochet across.
  • On the Decrease Edge: Double crochet two together (dc2tog) over the last two stitches. Turn.

Subsequent Rows: Repeat the shaping row to maintain the asymmetry. To add the mesh texture, switch to a Filet Crochet sequence on alternating rows: work 1 double crochet, chain 1, skip 1 stitch, and repeat across.

Technique Explainer: How to DC2TOG (Double Crochet 2 Together)

This decrease stitch keeps your edges clean:

  1. Yarn over, insert hook into the first stitch, yarn over, and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook).
  2. Yarn over, pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook).
  3. Yarn over, insert hook into the next stitch, yarn over, and pull up a loop (4 loops on hook).
  4. Yarn over, pull through 2 loops (3 loops on hook).
  5. Yarn over,  pull through all 3 loops.

4. Back Lace-Up Panels

  • Step 1: Attach your yarn to the vertical side edge of the body panel.

  • Step 2: Work even vertical rows of double crochet to form a clean side-to-back panel.

  • Step 3 (Eyelet Row): To create loops for your laces, work a row as follows: Double crochet 2, chain 2, skip 2 stitches, double crochet 4. Repeat from * to * across the row.

  • Step 4: Repeat these steps exactly on the opposite side edge of your top. Fasten off.

5. Straps and Finishing Touches

  • Top Straps: Attach your yarn to the top chain-1 point of one cup. Chain until your strap reaches 12 to 15 inches (or your desired length). Slip stitch back down the chain to the cup to thicken the strap. Secure and repeat on the second cup.

  • Corset Tie: Create a long, separate foundation chain approximately 50 to 60 inches long. Fasten off.

  • Assembly: Weave all remaining yarn ends securely into your stitches using a yarn needle. Lay your top flat and lace the long corset tie through the back eyelets in a criss-cross fashion.
